Abstract:

The role of tourism as an economic tool for community development has been documented in several studies. Therefore, this study appraised the tourism potentials of River Osse, Nigeria, and assessed the perception of members of Nikorogha community towards Nikorogha waterfront as a tourism destination. River Osse has several tourism potentials in areas of sports fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. The adjoining forest area provides additional tourism activities such as wildlife hunting and game viewing. The waterfront situated at Nikorogha community provides an appealing point of entry to explore the tourism potentials of River Osse. Findings of this study showed that elders and youths of Nikorogha community are aware of these tourism potentials and the role it can play in developing their community in areas of provision of infrastructural facilities, job creation, revenue generation as well as resource conservation. However, the poor state of infrastructural facilities of the community has not encouraged tourism development of Nikorogha waterfront. Both elders and youths of the community expressed their readiness towards developing the waterfront on River Osse into a tourism site. However, they demanded adequate community participation in the planning, management, and development of the tourism potentials. Adequate community participation will go a long way in safeguarding the tourism products upon its establishment.
