Abstract:

The sustainable development goals (SDG) right now are the main focus for every nation in the world to tackle and implement. With the rising of environmental problems and risks, the right policy should be planned and implemented promptly. Implementation of policy alone cannot ensure the success of the sustainable development goals. It must blend up together with the right ethics and thinking among the society. In Malaysia, ethics towards environment played a major role since the implementation of New Economics Policy in 1970 and Vision 2020 in 1991. Now, with the uprising TN50 we believe that the environmental ethics of Malaysian society have shifted again. The ethics shifting from anthropocentrism to technocentrism, then to ecocentrism eventually. A nation cannot simply start their economic development without degrading their natural resources. They have to use it, they have to pollute it. Then after their economic development become stable, they will turn to the technology by creating and producing much less polluting industry, renewable energy and etc. Eventually, the people will become ecocentric where they will be more preservative and conservative towards their nature and the component in it. With the right enforcement of law and governance, TN50 could be the solution to protect the environment from the harm that may emerge in the future.
