Utilization of silk waste for development of Muga Tasar blended yarn

Abstract:The mixing or blending of fiber is a good way to combine fibers so that good qualities are highlighted and poor characteristics are minimized. It may also enhance the properties such as strength, appearance, comfort etc. In this study an attempt was made to utilize the Tasar pierced cocoon fiber which is also a waste through blending it with Muga pierced cocoon fibre. Yarns were prepared in ring spinning system. The Tasar and Muga silk blended yarn were prepared in four different blend ratios viz. 0:100, 30:70, 50:50, 70:30. The prepared yarns showed count of medium to fine. Yarn properties like yarn count, twist, lea strength, CSP, unevenness, thick and thin places and neps of yarns were studied and the results revealed that the 0:100 Muga and 50:50 Tasar:Muga blended yarns had better properties as compared to 30:70 and 70:30. The addition of Muga fibre improved the properties of yarn count, lea strength, CSP, unevenness of the blended yarns. This study will help the handloom industries of India to increase the usage of silk waste. Thus, it will prove as an eco-friendly approach to convert waste into appreciated products. This approach will help in income generation of the country also.
