Abstract:

This study assessed the effect of different soil media on the growth performance of Jatropha curcas cuttings in the Biological and Research Garden of Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola. The soil media used were clay+topsoil+cowdung; sand+topsoil+cowdung; sand+topsoil mixed in the ratio of 2:2:1, 2:2:1 and 2:1, respectively. The growth performance was measured in terms of number of buds, plant height, leaf area and number of leaves sprouted. The study was laid out on a Split Plot Design with three treatments and eleven replications. Data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance and means that are significant were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). A significant variation was observed between the soil media (p < 0.05) and the highest mean growth was recorded in the mixture of sand+topsoil+cowdung with a mean of 5 cm in the number of buds, 25 cm in leaf, 13 cm2 in leaf area and 21cm in plant height. The least mean growth was observed in the mixture of sand+topsoil with mean growth of 4 cm in number of buds, 16 cm in leaf, 12 cm in plant height and 10 cm2 in leaf area. The study revealed that sand+topsoil+cowdung had the best potential ability for the propagation of Jatropha curcas cuttings in the study area.
