Effect of aqueous extract of plants against root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita in vitro

With the aim of promotion of organic pesticides, extract of different parts of six plant species were investigated for their nematicidal activity against eggs and second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita under in vitro conditions. Nematode eggs were exposed for 7 days and juveniles for 24, 48 and 72 h in different concentrations (1000 to 5000 ppm) of plants extract. Results revealed that all the plant extracts inhibited egg hatching and survival of juveniles in a dose dependent manner. Exposure to aqueous plant extracts caused substantial reduction in egg hatching. The 5000 ppm concentration of Vernonia galamensis and Alternanthera pungens extracts were most effective in reducing egg hatching. Likewise, mortality of juveniles was strongly favoured by the concentration of extract, plant species and exposure period. The 5000 ppm concentration of V. galamensis and A. pungens extracts exhibited highly promising mortality rates with LC50 values 2041.73 ppm and 2238.72 ppm, respectively, after 72 h of exposure. Among all tested plants, Amaranthus spinosus and Launea procumbens were least effective in inhibiting egg hatching and juvenile mortality at all the exposure duration. Thus the above findings suggested that aqueous plant extracts have potential to be explored as natural nematicides for control of root-knot nematodes.
