Abstract:

Cleome amblyocarpa (Cleomaceae) is a herbaceous plant widespread in sandy soils of the arid lands, with potential ethnobotanical applications in the folk medicine. Since, desert plants have challenges related to seeds germination, germination studies were conducted and the influence of the growing media and seeds color on seedlings emergence rate were tested. Soil water retention characteristics were studied by pressure plate extractor methods to explore the influence of three soil matric potentials (pF: 1.7 (control), 1.9 (moderate stress), 2.1 (severe stress)) on the mature plants by applying three irrigation schedules measured by Stevens pF Sensors. The influence of different irrigation levels was studied on the vegetative growth parameters, vegetative yield, including fruits yield and physiological parameters of the leaves, including chlorophyll (A, B, and total), carotenoids, and total proline content. The vegetative yield was recorded by fresh and dry weights, and physiological parameters were tested using spectrophotometry methods.
